Umer Piracha (@umerpiracha) is a Sufi vocalist and sound artist whose work invites deep spiritual presence and emotional resonance. Raised in the Sufi city of Multan, Pakistan, and mentored within a 700-year Qawwali lineage, Umer blends South Asian devotional traditions with contemporary sonic and contemplative practices.
Now based in New York City, he has performed at Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center, Grace Cathedral, and been featured on NPR. His project Resonance of Grace creates immersive soundbaths rooted in sacred music, and his collaborations with Harvard Divinity School explore the role of sound in spiritual healing. He also leads Falsa (@falsamusic), a transcultural collective bridging World, Jazz, Sufi aesthetics, and global improvisation.

DHAMĀL is a percussion-led Sufi rhythm gathering rooted in South Punjabi and Sindhi traditions, where listening naturally spills into movement. The evening begins with a focused set- Sufi voice, dhol, tabla, and trumpet- before opening into a shared space (open jam) shaped by repetition, pulse, and collective energy.
In shrine culture across the Indus region, dhamāl is how communities hold grief, joy, devotion, and exhaustion together in public-through rhythm rather than explanation. This gathering brings that function into a contemporary Brooklyn context, without spectacle or instruction.

BOMBYX is a non-profit organization established to steward the property at 130 Pine Street, in Florence, Massachusetts - a historic gathering place founded by abolitionists who championed anti-slavery, gender equity, and religious tolerance. Carrying these values forward, we serve our community as a venue for transformative arts experiences, spiritual growth, and challenging conversations.

Violinist and meditation guide Carson Marshall has teamed up with Sufi vocalist Umer Piracha to create a soundbath-workshop that is equally grounded in their respective musical traditions and spiritual lineages, AND invites seekers of all backgrounds to draw from the richness of Buddhist meditation and Sufi Qawwali.
his soundbath will be followed by a conversation with Umer Piracha, led by Pastor Marisa Egerstrom, so we can learn more from Umer about how he makes sense of centuries-old musical and spiritual traditions, Sufi wisdom, and Buddhist practice in his own modern life. Umer's band Falsa bridges the 14th and 21st centuries - and will be performing the night before!
